Aleem and John's research project

a) Main reason behind obesity in SST?

b) We are focusing on the Main reason(or root cause) for obesity?

c) Singapore has a lot of obese people. Hence, this people are very unhealthy. If we can find the main reason behind obesity, we can find a solution to help Singaporeans stay fit and healthy.

d) It is reasonable. This is because there are a lot of obese people in singapore. We can interview them and then find out the common things that they do. Also, we can also interview people who has gone from obese to acceptable weight and see what they did.

e) There is definitely sufficient given the massive number of obese people in Singapore.

f) We will use interviews and observations to do research on our project. We will first interview fat people and people who has gone from fat to thin and see what they think. Next, we will observe the common patterns in how fat people grow fat and then observe the common actions the people take to go from obese weight to acceptable weight.

We shall use this three links because they provide relevant information to our project. This three websites has a large database of information on obesity that will greatly aide us in this research project. Apart from that, these three websites are all very famous in Singapore and usually top the search engine results when the 'obesity', 'teenage', 'Singapore' and 'Asia' are searched.

h) We will use surveys to find the main reason behind obesity in Singapore.

Siddharth And Darren Research Project

(A) What is so interesting in a game that it attracts adults

(B) Our Focus is in the video game industry, on the audience for the games being the Adults. That is why our topic is focussed.

(C) It is because, if the research is fruitful, it will result in generating a lot of revenue for game companies.

(D) Nowadays, more adults are involved in gaming and we could take surveys in shops sells videogames.

(E) It is because, we have experience in taking surveys and we just need to find out what games the adults are buying.

(F) As the century passes, technology becomes more advanced which will cause the gaming industry to increase its goods and we just need to find out the number of adults buying what kind of video games.

Ian and Shaun research project

(A) Is NEWater really safe to drink?
(B) It focuses on NEWater claimed drinkable water.
(C) If it is drinkable, we can assure people that it is safe to drink. If it is not, we can send our project to the government to stop people from drinking this water.
(D) It would just require us to visit the NEWater plant and interview people on streets going outside only.
(E) It is manageable as we have already planned what we are going to do and its definitely possible.
(F) It is accessible as the NEWater treatment plant allow people to enter.

Water Conservation (S106B)

A) How to motivate and encourage people to save water?
B) Water resources are running out soon.
C) More and more people are using more than what they should.
D) This is a serious problem that could potentially be a crisis throughout the world.
E) It is easy to find people who take this as a problem as water crisis is something which everyone is facing.
F) A lot of people are wasting water in Singapore alone.

a) A statement of our research title:
How has photography changed the way we see the world

b) Explain why is it focussed?
We are going to research on how photography has changed the way SST students perceive reality.

c) Explain why is it significant?
We want to find out how has the photographs changed the world, like how have photos changed the perspective of how people see things in reality. In this way, we can find out how different each photo affects how each student sees reality.

d) Explain why is it feasible?
It is feasible for we can ask anyone for their opinions and it is a rather targeted topic.

e) Explain why is it manageable?
There are four people working on this research and therefore we can divide the work equally.

f) Explain why it is accessible?
The resources that we need are easily available - on the internet and the people around us.

g) State at least 3 sources of information that you will be drawing your research upon (3 web links) and why you choose them.
-National Museum Of Singapore
-Students of SST
-Photography websites
These are useful sources where we can get the information we need efficiently.
(H) State your type of data collection.
We can interview people and do some surveys to see how each student respond to each photograph. From this data that we collected, we can find out how has different people gets affected of the way they understand reality.

Entertainment Enjoyed by Secondary School Students

Lau Ler How, S1-06
Charlene Tan, S1-06

We want to find out what kind of watchable or readable entertainment (Romance, Horror, Sci-Fi etc.) is enjoyed by secondary one school students in Singapore.

It is focused as we are only conducting this survey only on Secondary one school students in Singapore.

We want to find out if the type of thing they watch/read is due to their life and personality.
eg. A girls likes romance more, why?

If we know the type of things they read/watch is affected by their lifestyle, then we would know more about a person just by knowing what they like reading/watching. This makes it more easy for us to access them without asking too many questions.

It is feasible as we can easily talk to people (juniors, seniors, classmates) on Facebook. We also know a lot of people from other schools that we contact over Facebook regularly.

Our type of data collection is by doing surveys on people online and we can make use of the upcoming STGCC to talk to other people in other school. Also we can get our (not from SST) friends to ask their classmates to complete the survey we have given to them.

a) What is the effect of soilless farming on plants?
b) It is focused as soilless farming on plants obtains only one by-product, which is the effect of the plants grown by aeroponics or hydroponics.
c) It is significant as soilless farming is very important in the future of the food industry, as the demand for food is increasing and the production rate of food is not fast enough as there is not enough land, so man can only resort to soilless farming to keep up with the demand for food.
d) The idea is feasible as we can easily obtain information about soilless farming and it is possible to conduct our own experiment.
e) This idea is manageable as we only need to handle plants or obtain information from the internet.
f) There are soilless farms in Singapore and we can easily pay a visit to the farms.

(A) A STATEMENT OF YOUR RESEARCH TITLE
The popularity of Chinese language in SST is a starting point on how to make students like chinese. This will play a major role in the industrial and social relationship of Singapore and the ever growing China.
(B) EXPLAIN WHY IS IT FOCUSSED
We have realise as students that there is a huge decrease of interest in Chinese language among students. As such we want to affirm our guesses starting with the students of SST.
(C) EXPLAIN WHY IS IT SIGNIFICANT
It is because Chinese language is a necessity in daily life, whether it is for everyday communication or for business, chines would be a must for many Chinese people or even non-Chinese.If we found proof that students don't like Chinese,We can ask them find a way to allow students to enjoy the uses of the Chinese language, allowing them to be able to communicate and improve their lives.
(D) EXPLAIN WHY IS IT FEASIBLE
It is feasible as we students of SST are uses of technology whether complicated or simple,as such we can use questions and votes to find the answer instead of asking it real life.
(E) EXPLAIN WHY IS IT MANAGEABLE

It is manageable as we can process this information in the virtual world without much effort and time, which is why we can use extra time for improvements of the project.

(F) EXPLAIN WHY IS IT ACCESSIBLE
We can vote using facebook easily and other ways which students of SST will use it everyday.
(G) STATE AT LEAST 3 SOURCES OF INFORMATION THAT YOU WILL BE DRAWING YOUR RESEARCH UPON (3 web links) AND WHY YOU CHOOSE THEM
http://www.every.sg/why-do-most-chinese-speakinglooking-singaporeans-dont-consider-themselves-chinese/
The reason we choose this link is because we want to ask Why do the young or even the old in Singapore do not want to be called Chinese? Why do we not want to follow our ancestry and traditional customs? Is it because of relationship problems and misunderstandings between Singaporean and Chinese from other countries?
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110129144011AAWOTrx
We choose it as we want to ask why Singaporean Chinese do not speak their language of their ancestors? Why do we speak in english most of the time?Is it related to the learning experience of Chinese in School?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish
The reason is basically of Singaporeans talking Singlish.Does this related and conclude that there is still some liking for Chinese language in Singaporean Chinese, young and old.

Lesson 2 - Choosing and defining a topic

In Term 3 Week 2's lesson, you are to choose and define your topic for IRS. Here are the tips:

Choosing and defining a topic for IRS is like setting your own exam question. Therefore, you must choose a topic that allows you to score well by ensuring that:

1. The topic is FOCUSSED. This is because it is easier to give an in-depth and insightful answer to a more focussed question compared to one that is very broad and general.

2. The topic is examining an important and SIGNIFICANT issue. The way you present the topic must bring out its significance.

3. The topic is feasible, the required information is ACCESSIBLE and the scope is MANAGEABLE. This ensures that you do not set yourself up for failure or put yourself in a difficult situation.

4. You can find SUFFICIENT INFORMATION about the topic. This gaurantees that you have the necessary information to substantiate your ideas in the written report.

5. There are 5 types of data collection method that you can choose from. They are:
(a) To make generalisations about a target population by usingSURVEYS
(b) To gain an in-depth and holistic understanding of an issue or about a group of people by using INTERVIEWS
(c) To examine a particular behaviour by using OBSERVATIONS
(d) To make a causal claim by using EXPERIMENTS
(e) To draw out general principles or recommendations for a macro or complex issue by using
CASE STUDIES
